  16. New York. Peale's 1952 blend of pop theology and self-help nostrums,
  17. The Power of Positive Thinking, remains one of the most popular
  18. books inhistory, despite--or perhaps because of--the simplicity
  19. of its message, summed up in such chapter titles as "Expect
  20. the Best and Get It" and "I Don't Believe in Defeat." Peale
  21. spread his philosophy in 46 books that achieved sales of 21
  22. million in 41 languages. Peale's darker side emerged when he
  23. led the anti-Catholic opposition to John F. Kennedy's run for
  24. the presidency.
